I received this article from my man Q-moshyn (www.myspace.com/qmoshyn )
and it’s his response to the article “Damn the People” written by Makes Me Wanna Holla that I posted on Monday April 7th. You can check it out here if you missed it http://wiseintelligent.blogspot. com/
Check it out and please add on!
Makes Me Wanna Holla (I couldn't determine your gender from this submission), you're just frustrated, but we all know deep down inside you don't really mean "damn the people." if so, why not join the KKK and take this message to the streets instead and say this out loud to some real black people? You remind me of what my godfather calls an 'Educated Fool.' you're the type to watch cnn and cspan and read The Times and all that, could tell somebody left and right and upside down about the presidential candidates, but are so disenchanted with the system that you won't show up on election day.
Now that you've wasted everybody's time with your rant and got it off your chest, do you feel better now??? I know I don't feel better, enlightened, or anything by what you've said other than getting exposed to some Lost Poets material that I hadn't gotten to hear before. Makes Me Wanna Holla, your only attempt at mentioning a solution is "Black folk need a mental revolution! We need change! We need to change our minds!" Well, to that I say "No s---, sherlock!" We can continue to spend a whole lot of time and energy complaining about all the problems we know already exist, and argue to a fault amongst ourselves about who is or isn't supposed to do something about it, or we can actually do something about it our own selves. I also find it peculiar that you don't identify the things you are doing to rectify all of the problems mentioned in this rant yet you criticize all of the readers this is supposed to galvanize. I can definitely say that for the majority of
black folk that I know, reverse psychology and ranted rhetoric, unless for entertainment purposes in a comedy sketch or a rap song, doesn't work. We need to be talked to, not talked at firstly, then we need to be shown how to get things done and not just talked down to.
So I'm speaking about finding a solution to the problems you speak of. Leadership...People say our black leaders have like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have been failing us. And although I hear many who are inspired by Barack, I hear just as many looking at him with the same incredulous skepticism we looked at Michael Jackson with during his last trial. I say, why are we still waiting for the next MLK or Malcolm when we have recently shown that when we come together over a cause we can and will continue to uplift ourselves in huge ways when no one else will ie: the Million Man/Woman Marches, Hurricane Katrina relief, Jena6, just to name a few.
Complacency - yeah yeah a lot of black people may be lazy, toil in obscurity or whatever...how about offering something better to those who are willing to listen? ask any poor person in the hood and they'll more than likely will want better for themselves and their families. fact is most won't have access to those opportunities because of their lack of education and a sense of hopelessness. Alot of people in the hood aren't aware of the programs that are out there that can help them change their situations whether it be emotional, mental, financial, or chemical. sometimes they're so used to being hopeless that they don't recognize opportunity or have hope when it's right in front of their faces. so what is one who actually gives a crap supposed to do? stop trying to expose their people to more access to education, jobs, wealth-creating entities because they think less than 10% of them won't latch on? should doctors stop trying to heal people in the hood?
should teachers stop teaching in the hood? should financial advisors not come to the hood? should businesses only be in the suburbs? should preachers stop having churches or mosques or temples in the hood? are you saying that that less than 10% to which you spoke of isn't worth helping? are you saying that if you were to put that less than 10% on to opportunities that they wouldn't be able to "feel your frustration" and unlike you actually "act accordingly?" You don't give your people enough credit. You know how skilled we are. We're inventors, scholars and educators, doctors, lawyers, engineers, contractors, athletes, entertainers, preachers. We are creative, innovative and entrepreneurial leaders in a system that sets us up to be followers and workers. for real, you wrote this blog with rather colorful language. that's the best you can do in terms of how you're going to help shed light on a new attitude and new perspective? You don't have to believe
in the people if you don't want to...but i'm sure i speak for most of the readers with any sense who say if you don't believe in us, then shut the f--- up and let's listen to somebody who does.
You say yourself "When the whole world knows, as well as I do, we ain’t gon do shit about it! There are no more excuses, we live in an era where any information you want can be obtained at the touch of a button! We have many examples of successful cultures that exist in this society that we can fashion our own resurrection after!" Well if that's the case, and since you're ready to give up on your people (you are black right?), then you're just as bad as the people you're critiquing. i was always told that if you're not trying to fix the problem than you are part of the problem. You are a hypocrite in the worst way because you have all this information "at the touch of a button" as you say, have analyzed the problems and psycho-analyzed the people, yet have not provided ways to even attempt to change the minds of the people for whom you call for a revolution. To get back to my educated fool analogy, you're like an old man who hates the chronic cough
he's developed from lung cancer who keeps smoking cigarettes or a fat lady with diabetes who hates to look at herself in the mirror and can't bear the thought of going on dialysis or maybe getting a toes amputated yet keeps sneaking big macs and won't exercise.
as for me, I feel revolution starts first with education then economic education then socio-political education. How I participate in this form of revolution is by helping my younger family members, the kids in my church, or neighborhood kids with their homework or tutoring in subjects. Next I volunteer for Junior Achievement, a non profit that gets volunteers from the local business community to go into schools and after-school programs to lead educational games and activities for kids from K-12th grades about business, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, citizenship (the importance of voting and doing community service) and workforce readiness. Next, I'm at these same locations discussing Black history, drug awareness and prevention, gang prevention, promoting abstinence with these same kids throughout the state. I make positive hip hop music that can entertain as well as inspire people to pursue their dreams www. myspace. com/qmoshyn. my wife and i
have our own company and both our relationship and the company are doing rather well so far despite all of the things we go through. the important thing to note is that we don't disown each other, we work together, and work through things together. whether it's
blood, sweat, and tears so that we could even have an opportunity vote, work, be, do, and say whatever we want. Shoot if it wasn't for some of your (are you black? excuse me) my people, you (if you are indeed black) wouldn't be able to read anything, let alone write your blog. I don't tell you what i do to pat myself of the back or brag as much as i'm pointing out that i'm on the front lines every day trying to make a difference and i'm directly aligned with many like-minded people, many of whom are black. I say it cause i'm very offended by what you said for myself and all of my friends and family in education, politics, entertainment, medicine, ministry, journalism, athletics, etc. who are trying to make it and inspire others to make it too. i say it to hopefully inspire somebody who reads this to do something to help a cause they care about. mine is education and the arts, but for others it may be health/medicine, public policy, the environment, teen
pregnancy, violence and conflict resolution...everybody has their own unique gifts and talents and values. the least one could do to spark revolution is to share those gifts with others, channel those talents towards their values to steer others on the right path. if a lot of people do even just a little bit, a whole lot can get done. it has to be done together though. idealistic? maybe. but it shouldn't and doesn't have to take drastic situations like rodney king or sean bell to bring us together to do something. we prove time and again that we can each bring something to the table in our own communities, because God knows we have and need more competent people with all types of talents on the front lines, in the board rooms, in the court rooms, in the operating rooms, and even in the city halls of neighborhoods and communities world-wide. I challenge you, Makes Me Wanna Holla, to count your blessings, your gifts and talents so as to not waste them as
you've done here. You seem to be very smart so i'm sure you understand 'to whom much is given, much is required.' well, a true mental revolution is going to require better from your gift of writing than this blog e-banging. stop preaching to the choir...although, i can't really even call what you were doing preaching. If you really want to contribute to a revolution, keep that type of blogging to yourself, get off your butt and get out into the community and help at least one of those people you're dissing try to spark the revolution!
I'll end on these note here. Ignorance and negativity births more ignorance and negativity which is evident from your frustration and revealed in the statistics you noted. You can't birth positive from negative, yet your outlook is very negative. Brother Wise Intelligent's tag for this blog says "The only rule we have is that all comments MUST be INTELLIGENT!" Well, you have broken the rules, and just like the people you have condemned, you, my friend need to be held accountable.
